Comments Deane's Comments(rates this release 3.5/5.0) The Rebels
were: Dez Dickenson, Andre Cymone, Bobby Z, Gayle Chapman, and Prince. They took
turns on vocals and writing. This project is likely from the summer of 1979, but
never got mastered nor released. Includes the earliest version of If I Love You
Tonight with Gayle on vocals. The tracks range from guitar rock to disco funk to
blues ballad. Also, as filler, on this disc are two outakes from 1978 and an
interview for a fictious radio station, obviously Prince trying to be cool for a
chick.
Dale's
Comments(rates this release 4/5.0) This disc is part of the 'must have' release Studio Nights, an
excellent 6 CD set. This disc has a lot of non-Prince tracks on it, but it is
still a very nice document and considering the time period it came from the
sound quality is excellent. Hearing Gayle Chapman sing If I Love You Tonight
[sic] makes you think Mayte has a nice vocal range. Sorry Mayte, you know I love
ya! ;)
Mike's
Comments(rates this release 4/5.0) These tracks come from Prince's band project of 1979, and as
such his involvement in them is limited. He wrote some of the tracks (the best
being 'You', later retitled as 'U' when he gave it to Paula Abdul), plays some
instruments and sings lead on a few songs ('Baby baby baby' and 'Nadeara'). The
K-Funk interview is a light-hearted practice interview conducted by Nadeara -
probably not her real name - on Prince. It soon collapses into farce as both
start making up stories.
