4DaFunk’s reworking of this class Controversy concert, and as with their
previous ‘Columbia ’81’ release, this has been
sourced from the ‘City Lights’ set.
Again, the quality of their improvement far extends simply touching up the sound
and the drop-out during ‘Controversy’ has been repaired. The quality of this
soundboard recording is marginally better than the Columbia recording with the
crowd being barely audible throughout, however both are of exceptional quality.
The show is stunning however (as with the Columbia show) the opening ‘The Second
Coming’ is missing. ‘Head’ once again steals the show and is unique in the
respect it includes a robotic keyboard/synth solo as well as Prince’s normal
guitar masturbation segment which itself is inspired. The closing encore of
‘Partyup’ unusually includes the keyboard/synth solo repeated from ‘Head’ as an
intro to the song.
This release, as with the other 4DaFunk releases sourced from the City Lights
set, is sub-titled “4DaFunk’s Soundboard Series” and should be viewed as an
updated, refreshed version of the classic City Lights set and not a replacement
of it.
