This is a CD/DVD combination release documenting week #6 of the London
residency of summer 2007. The audio part of the release is listed
HERE,
however it should be noted that they are not available separately, and are
packaged together. Both these shows video recordings are not new sources,
and both have been circulating for a while amongst collectors/fans. "Eye"
Records have taken both and pressed onto a dual-layered DVD along with some
bonus video material which was made available via 3121.com. First and
foremost this isn't a straight rip-off of the free fan releases and the 9th
September video has at least had some improvement and is better than the
previous version - so let's start there. Originally available back in 2007
on the fan release '21 Nights In London 9th September' DVDR, the audio has
been replaced by the superior recording which is available on Disc 1 of the
audio portion of this release. The picture quality is also slightly
improved, and whilst it remains linear in places, the colour seems sharper
and the contrast corrected. It's still the same video recording, so the
shaking in places remains intact, but the audio replacement and the improved
picture all make this better than before.
The video recording was slightly incomplete and missing 3 minutes from the opening 'We Will Rock You' and part of 'Let's Go Crazy', and "Eye" have filled this opening segment with a quick tour book slideshow with the audio in the background. For my money, I'd rate the video footage as one of the best from the London stint, and even with the minor problems it suffers from, the picture quality is sharp and focused for the majority. The filming has it's moments of madness where the camera flails about, but for 90% of the time the filming is tight and concentrates on Prince. The second video recording here contains the 12th September concert which was made available on the fan release 'Monarchy In The UK'. Unfortunately I can't be so positive about the choice of including this video recording as there is zero difference between this and the previous free release - perhaps that's credit to the previous release, but I hate having to pay for something I already had long ago. The only difference is the menu has been removed (obviously), and the chaptering is slightly changed, but other than that, it's identical. It remains the only currently circulating video recording which films the giant overhead video screens, which has it's positives and negatives, and for that reason alone it's worth checking out - that said, if you already have it there's no reason to get this particular version. The bonus extra footage contains the 3rd August 2007 professionally filmed video recording which was made available on 3121.com, and while the colour and contrast is blinding and overpowering, and the picture condensed, it's a nice piece of footage.....albeit not from the week that this release is meant to be documenting.
The main menu and sub menu's for each show are easy to navigate and clear, however my only complain is the text is rather hard to read due to it being so small - not a major complaint, but a valid one. Overall this accompanying DVD release is rather hit or miss, which is a shame. I have no doubts the 9th September footage is vastly improved to the fan release with better sound and picture, and this is the saving grace of the release. The straight-rip of the 12th September footage with no difference to the free release is a major pity. Not a surprise, but a pity all the same.
