Fairly average Purple Rain show with excellent sound quality. A
few rare songs are in the set and an excellent jam on Baby I'm A Star. City
Lights is an amazing set of 11cds (9 shows) and is an important document of
early Prince performances.

The only thing I would call average about
this show is, well, nothing. The sound is well above average, the content is
truly outstanding with rare live gems like Father's Song, and God. The show
itself is inspired, Prince is at the top of his game. He has an impressive
repertoire to draw from and he knows it. He plays the crowd wonderfully and
sustains a near perfect flow and mixture of songs. The show opens with Let's Go
Crazy, as is typical for Purple Rain era shows, then he goes into a tirade of
mostly 1999 songs, mixing in one Purple Rain tune and the infamous Do Me, Baby
from Controversy. He spaces out the "hit songs" nearly perfect to keep the "top
40" crowd into it, and still satisfy the die hards that want to hear more than
what the radio feeds us. The packaging is top rate as with most of the City
Lights discs. It has a nice 6 page booklet with color pics from the period, and
the lyrics to Purple Rain, but no information about the show or the tour. The
nearly 24 minute Baby I'm A Star is a funk filled jam that must be heard.

A fantastic Purple rain show. Few surprises in the
setlist though 'Father's song' is a nice inclusion. Superb sound quality makes
this a must-have.
